The Legacy of Trench Warfare
In the last year of the trench warfare of World War I, the Allies brought in tanks. Due, in part, to this addition, the stalemate was finally broken. By November 11, 1918, the day the truce was signed, about 8.5 million men had lost their wives. This war became known as the "war to end all wars". Many of the survivors of trench warfare would never be the same again, physically or emotionally. Trench warfare then became known as a symbol of futility and is now avoided at all costs.
